An extension of artificial membranes for ion selective electrochemical work was the construction of biomimetic ion channel sensors [65]. These devices were based on Langmuir-Blodgett deposition of charged lipid membranes onto a glassy carbon electrode. This work indicated that a conductive zone can be opened reversibly by a stimulant-membrane interaction by surface charge alterations. This work has demonstrated how the concept of the conductivity measurement could be extended to the more common and useful technique of cyclic voltammetry. [Pg.245]

In an attempt to mimic the highly sophisticated ion transport properties found in biological membranes for the development of an ion channel sensor, a comprehensive study on artificial systems was carried out [10]. It was shown that the permeability of orientated monolayers of various calixarene esters is strongly influenced by the complexation with metal ions [11]. It was reported that the membrane permeability of calix[6]arene esters for a neutral redox-active... [Pg.428]

ICSs have also been successfully employed for anion sensing. For instance, Umezawa et al. prepared an ion-channel sensor that is selective for phosphate ion in aqueous solution by surface functionalization of a gold electrode with a SAM of a bis-thiourea receptor. They studied the behavior of the material in the presence of several inorganic anions by cyclic voltammetry with [Fe(CN)g] as the redox marker. In the absence of anions, the surface... [Pg.394]
