Iodide ion effect

The acid-catalyzed reactions of sulfoxides with halide ions in protic solvents involve protonated species (144). The iodide ion effects simple reduction, presumably via bonding with the soft OH . The harder Br and Cl promote racemization of optically active sulfoxides by the formation of sulfurane intermediates.
