Introduction to Nomenclature

Imagine that you go to a party, are introduced to hundreds of people you have never seen before, and then spend the rest of the evening trying to remember their names. This awkward situation could be avoided altogether if you had access to a refined system of nomenclature that enabled you to memorize the names of the people instead of using brute-force drill-and-practice over and over again for each individual. You d still have to memorize the system, but that s much easier than memorizing hundreds of names. [Pg.142]

In this chapter we will introduce nearly 1500 chemical names for elements and compounds. You will memorize a few, but you will know the names of the others simply by learning and applying the system. After you have smdied the chapter, if you are given either the name or the chemical formula of an element or compound, you will be able to supply the other. Furthermore, you will be able to do this with hundreds of compounds that aren t even directly covered in the chapter. But you will be able to do these remarkable things only if you LEARN THE SYSTEM. [Pg.142]
