Nickel(II) acetylaeetonate has been recommended as a very efficient homogeneous catalyst for intramolecular cyclopropanations for unsaturated diazoketones 171 The yields were better than with activated CuO as catalyst (see Table 10 for examples). The authors of this study seem to combine routinely thermocatalytic with photochemical (tungsten lamp) decomposition of the diazoketones. The benefit of this procedure (higher yields, shorter reaction times) has been communicated in the CuO case, but not for the Ni(acac)2-eatalyzed reaction.

The identification of unknown chemical compounds isolated in inert gas matrices is nowadays facilitated by comparison of the measured IR spectra with those computed at reliable levels of ab initio or density functional theory (DFT). Furthermore, the observed reactivity of matrix isolated species can in some instances be explained with the help of computed reaction energies and barriers for intramolecular rearrangements. Hence, electronic structure methods developed into a useful tool for the matrix isolation community. In this chapter, we will give an overview of the various theoretical methods and their limitations when employed in carbene chemistry. For a more detailed qualitative description of the merits and drawbacks of commonly used electronic structure methods, especially for open-shell systems, the reader is referred to the introductory guide of Bally and Borden.29... 

In the last two decades, there has been a large accumulation of experimental evidence as well as of theoretical interpretations of intramolecular reactions. One notes, however, that attention has been focused on the phenomena of immediate interest to the various specialists. As a consequence of the fact that specialisation implies intensification of knowledge on the one hand but limitation on the other, there has still been insufficient communication and cross-fertilisation between the different schools. This situation is well exemplified by the two most extensive reviews on intramolecular phenomena, namely, that of Kirby (1980), entitled Effective Molarities for Intramolecular Reactions , and that of Winnik (1981a), entitled Cyclisation and the Conformation of Hydrocarbon Chains , which present different approaches and apparently unrelated facts and theories.
