Intramammary preparations

Nafcillin is a semisynthetic penicillin that is resistant to -lactamases but can be largely inactivated by hepatic enzymes. It is the active ingredient in intramammary preparations intended for treatment of mastitis in dairy cows and prevention of mastitis during the dry period in cattle, sheep, and goats. 

Mastitis may be observed at any stage of lactation and has also been seen in non-lactating, nul-liparous mares and in fillies. Mastitis occurs most commonly in the summer months and is often associated with Strep, equi subsp. zooepidemicus infection. The treatment of mastitis usually includes the parenteral administration of appropriate antimicrobial agents (see Ch. 2). The udder may also be treated using frequent milking, hydrotherapy and infusion of commercially available intramammary preparations for cattle. A NSAID may be administered to treat both the fever and the discomfort associated with mastitis. 

For intramammary application, the storage container comes with its applicator nozzle attached. The external design and diameter of the nozzle is such that it permits ease of insertion into the teat. Its length can vary depending on where in the teat the preparation is destined to be delivered, but generally nozzle lengths provide access through the teat...
