Intramammary applicators

Administration of streptomycin intramuscularly is the method of choice for treating systemic infections. Oral forms of streptomycin or dihydrostreptomycin, frequently combined with sulfonamide drugs and other compounds, are also used in animals for treatment of enteric infections. In addition, streptomycin is used as a feed additive for growth promotion purposes. In some countries, the combination of streptomycin with procaine penicillin is used as an initial nonspecific therapy in farm animals, and in intramammary applications for treatment of mastitis. Intramuscular dosages are in the range 5-10 mg/kg bw, while oral dosages are 20 mg/kg bw. Dihydrostreptomycin is also used in veterinary medicine in intramammary and topical treatments. [Pg.37]

For intramammary application, the storage container comes with its applicator nozzle attached. The external design and diameter of the nozzle is such that it permits ease of insertion into the teat. Its length can vary depending on where in the teat the preparation is destined to be delivered, but generally nozzle lengths provide access through the teat... [Pg.324]

Other less frequently used parenteral routes such as intra-articular or sub-conjuctival injections and intramammary or intrauterine infusions have limited application they aim at directly placing high drug concentrations close to the site of infection. These routes of administration differ from the major parenteral routes in that absorption into the systemic circulation is not a prerequisite for delivery of drug to the site of action. When the infection site is relatively inaccessible, such as in the case of mastitis, the combined use of systemic and local delivery of drug to the site of infection may represent the optimum approach to treatment. [Pg.7]
