Intra-articular anesthesia has been used successfully in many patients, with few adverse effects (SEDA-20,126). However, it is not always safe at least one death has occurred from bupivacaine used in this way (163). Intra-articular anesthesia in the knee joint was followed in one case by necrosis of the knee ligament and the skin, apparently due to localized drug-induced embolism (164).
