Interpretation of analytical data

The hydrogeological and QA/QC aspects of hazardous waste field investigations are fairly well advanced. Yet needed, however, is a systematic approach to the design of field sampling, to the selection of compounds for analysis, and to the methods for interpretation of analytical data.

Sometimes the interpretation of analytical data does not need the deepest mathematical analysis but it is sufficient to get an impression on the structure of the data. Although the basic idea of graphical data interpretation is ancient (e.g., Brinton [1914]), the fundamentals of modern explorative data analysis (EDA) has been developed in the 1960s (Tukey [1962, 1977]).

If the renal clearance of a drug varies with urine flow, as with an extensively reabsorbed neutral drug such as methaqualone, then there may be a random sequence of positive and negative findings during the analysis of consecutive urine samples. In view of these difficulties, the interpretation of analytical data from urine samples alone should not be attempted unless urine is the only fluid available and there is some other information which will allow an estimate of the dose to be made.

Chemometrics has found widespread use in the interpretation of analytical data and is relied on for the development of NIRS methods.
