The research that backs this paper, that was not gathered from internet news sources and corporate websites, is part of a larger project on the cultural economy of Dubai, most especially the relationship between the cultural landscape and cultures of economic development. More specifically, it came from three visits to Dubai totaling six months between 2005 and 2007. The research specific to this chapter consisted of archival research and interviews with oflflcials and residents, and most especially, observation of the landscape.

The simple act of buying an online news article may involve numerous agents who provide search information, local and out-of-state newspaper pubhshers who have contractual obligations, reporters and columnists (who actually produce contents), payment service providers, banks, copyright clearing houses and so on. If Yahoo or Microsoft owned most Internet firms (publishers, payment services, search sites, etc.), a customer could possibly buy (or sell) products on the company s website and necessary transactions and payments could be handled by one firm.
