All wood chemical components (lignin, cellulose, hemicellulose, and extractives), which contain internal chemical groups such as carboxyl, carbonyl, aldehyde, unsaturated double bonds, phenolic hydroxyl, and external entities such as fats, waxes, and metal ions, are capable of absorbing sunlight or UV light. The absorbed energy can cause the dissociation of bonds in the molecules of the wood constituents. Similar to thermoplastics, the photodegradation of wood also involves a serials of radical-based reactions. 

Potassium 3-aniinopropylaniide [56038-00-7] (KAPA), KNHCH2CH2CH2-NH2, pX = 35, can be prepared by the reaction of 1,3-diaminopropane and potassium metal or potassium hydride [7693-26-7] (57—59). KAPA powder has been known to explode during storage under nitrogen in a drybox, and is therefore made in situ. KAPA is extremely effective in converting an internal acetylene or aHene group to a terminal acetylene (60) (see Acetylene-DERIVED chemicals). 

ENSR International Group soil cleaning process is an ex situ treatment for soils contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons. The process uses a combination of soil washing and solvent extraction. Soil washing removes heavy metals and hydrocarbons from coarse soil particles, resulting in a reduced volume of material to be treated by solvent extraction. Solvent extraction uses a chemical additive that enhances the extraction of hydrocarbons from soil particles in an aqueous slurry.
