Case study 3.8 illustrates a scheme that was designed primarily to develop high-flying employees. However, the case is also a good illustration of a mentoring scheme intended to foster international management capability. 

There are usually two types of trainers within mentoring schemes external facilitators/consultants who train program co-ordinators and relationship supervisors and trainers (internal or external) who are responsible for equipping mentors and mentees with the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to make relationships a success. To make things simpler, we will typically use the term trainer to refer to both types, but will make it clear, whenever a further distinction is necessary.

The scheme has been marketed through company websites and invitation letters. Half of the mentors recruited for the program were internal to Ericsson and typically recommended by senior management. The other half, the external mentors, were recruited with help from the business school IMD - they supplied a range of individuals who committed to mentoring on a voluntary basis.
