Integrated systems characteristics

In order to understand the characteristics of state-of-the-art scientific software, a description of the facilities of the RS/1 system is presented in this section as an example of the kind of software now available to support scientific data management needs. All facilities are based in a single integrated system. No extra steps are needed, for example, to use tabular data as the basis for statistics or to graph the results of modeling. 

One of the most topical ways of approaching this type of system, where separation and detection take place sequentially in space and time, to current trends in Science and Technology (e.g. automation and miniaturization) involves integrating both steps. Integrated systems of this type meet the requirements of chemical sensors [7,8] and differ clearly from conventional flow systems, where detection and mass transfer take place at different locations in the continuous configuration. In the liner approximation, we see thus that the NHIM is made of periodic/ quasi-periodic orbits, organized in the usual tori characteristic of the integrable systems. Because the NHIM is normally hyperbolic, each point of the sphere has stable/unstable manifolds attached to it. This situation is exactly parallel to the one described earlier for PODS. The Enviro-HIRLAM (see its description and validation in a separate paper by Korsholm et al. in this volume) is a fully online NWP-ACT integrated system. The following steps towards Enviro-HIRLAM are being incorporated or have already been achieved (1) nesting of models for high resolutions, (2) improved resolution of boundary and surface layer characteristics and structures, (3) urbanisation of the model, (4) improvement of advection schemes, (5) implementation of chemical mechanisms, (6) implementation of aerosol dynamics, (7) realisation of feedback mechanisms, (8) assimilation of monitoring data (ongoing).

The following system characteristics are strived for through the integration of design and production planning systems ... 

By means of the on conversion matrix, the rigidity matrix and the force vector of the cross-cut system are converted to the respective characteristics of the integrated system, which serve for formulation of the stem state equation. 

Sinkholes are characteristic features of karst terrain and may develop where solution-opened joints intersect (Waitham and Fookes, 2003). They may lead to an integrated system of subterranean galleries and caves. The latter are characteristic of thick massive limestone or dolostone formations. Sinkholes vary in diameter but usually are a few metres or tens of metres across and may descend up to 500 m in depth below the surface (Fig. 3.22).
