One possible exception to the parallel between the impact of transient insomnia and the impact of partial sleep deprivation may be stress-related transient insomnia. One could hypothesize that an individual under extreme stress (e.g., a death of a loved one) might experience a pronounced physiological stress response during the day, as well as at night, which might mitigate at least some of the impact of sleep disruption. However, for most transient insomnias, the parallel with sleep deprivation research would appear to be quite appropriate. [Pg.541]
