Whether the open space in the column inlet or outlet has to be filled (by packing or frit material) is not yet decided, but it seems to be much easier to operate the column with an open funnel-type column inlet and outlet. However, today s machining possibilities allow the manufacturing of the stainless steel parts with high precision at nearly all diameters. 

Apparatus 2-1 round-bottomed, three-necked flask, equipped with a dropping funnel (combined with a gas inlet), a mechanical stirrer and a reflux condenser connected to a cold trap (-78 C all connections are made gas-tight a stirrer of the type displayed in fig. 3, is used. 

In a hood, set up a 1-liter four-necked flask fitted with a mechanical stirrer, two Claisen-type adapters to accommodate a reflux condenser, a 250-ml addition funnel, a nitrogen inlet tube, a thermometer, and a 50-ml addition funnel. 

Equip a second stopcocked flask (2000 mL) with the Schlenk-type filter funnel. Stopper the upper joint of the funnel, connect its side-arm stopcock to a source of dry nitrogen, and the side-arm stopcock of the flask to a pump inlet.
