Initiation by sparks

The pure liquid explodes on freezing at — 167°C, and the gas is readily initiated by sparks, flame or contact with grease, dust or rubber tubing. Contact of the gas with aqueous potassium iodide also caused an explosion [1], The pure material is now readily accessible via the relatively stable intermediate, tetrafluoroammonium perchlorate [2],... [Pg.1340]

Dry mixtures of barium phosphinate and potassium chlorate bum rapidly with a feeble report if unconfined, but even under the slight confinement of enclosing in paper, a sharp explosion occurs. The mixture is readily initiated by sparks, impact or friction. A mixture of calcium phosphinate, potassium chlorate and quartz exploded during mixing. Mixtures of various phosphinates and chlorates have been proposed as explosives, but they are very sensitive to initiation by sparks, friction or shock. Admixture of powdered magnesium causes a brilliant flash on initiating the mixture. [Pg.1374]

Mixtures of thiocyanates with chlorates (or nitrates) are friction- and heat-sensitive, and explode on rubbing, heating to 400°C, or initiation by spark or flame [1]. A violent explosion occurred when a little chlorate was ground in a mortar contaminated with ammonium thiocyanate. A similar larger-scale explosion involving traces of barium thiocyanate is also described [2],... [Pg.1375]

Initiation by Electrostatic Discharge. This is described in detail under Electricity Extraneous Hazards Associated With It in Vol 5, pp E36-54. See also Initiation by Sparks... [Pg.371]

Black Powder possibly some dynamites can be initiated by sparks of a non-electrical nature such as those caused by metal-on-stone friction etc. Manufacturers of dynamite use nonsparking tools in their plants. This is probably... [Pg.372]

Combination of the elements may be explosive over a wide range of physical conditions, with initiation by sparks, radiant energy or catalysis, e.g. by yellow mercuric... [Pg.1453]

Hydrogen. Mixtures of hydrogen and chlorine over the 5-89% range of hydrogen are explosive and can be initiated by sparks, radiant energy, or catalysts.1718... [Pg.137]
