Infrared fight

Sequential photographs can be used to monitor pupil size over an extended time. If the pupil is illuminated with infrared fight and infrared-sensitive film is used, recordings can be made in total darkness. Although this method was used in seminal studies of the pupillary light reflex and other dynamic applications,6 7 it is seldom used today because of the high cost of film, processing time, and limited temporal resolution.

COBrF has been detected, by infrared spectroscopy, as a product of the oxidation and combustion of Hj-Oj-N -CBrFg mixtures between 4(X) and 500 C HF, HBr and CO3 are also produced as a result of the subsequent hydrolysis of COBrF [1225]. It would be extremely surprising if COBrF were not detectable as an oxidation/combustion product of other bromofluoroalkanes or bromochlorofluoroalkanes, such as those commonly used as fire-fighting agents. 

Again there is a light transmitter (e.g., an infrared LED) to illuminate a code disc. The code disc is made of a translucent material and is illuminated by the transmitter. A spiral shaped prism in the surface of the translucent code disc reflects the light perpendicular to the surface. Directly under the code disc there is a CMOS line sensor detecting the reflected fight. An additional reference prism in the code disc makes it possible to eliminate effects of a radial clearance.

The images that are generated by STM and AFM show structure but no true chemical composition. The details of the local chemistry on surfaces at the nanoscale level, however, are very important to understanding surface properties. Optical spectroscopy and microscopy provide a means of chemically identifying materials in conventional microscopy, however, the resolution limit is approximately half the wavelength of the fight used to illuminate the sample. Thus, spatial resolutions are typically limited to approximately 200 nanometers (7.9 X lO inches) in the visible and approximately 5,000 nanometers (2.0 X 10 inches) in the infrared parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. 

The analysis of thin films is often performed by infrared spectroscopy. Compared to reflection absorption measurements on metal surfaces using p-polarized fight at grazing incidence, investigation of self-supported thin films or of thin films on transparent substrates shows weaker infrared absorption bands. Weaker absorption bands are caused by the absence of the surface enhancement mechanism and the poorer reflectivity. On the other hand, due to the absence of the metal selection rule, spectra of p- and s-polarization can be recorded in the case of freestanding films or of transparent substrates.
