Inflation point

The OMD leaf filter (Stella Meta Filters) is a vertical leaf filter with a mbber diaphragm suspended between the leaves. The cake that forms on the leaves eventually reaches the diaphragm at which point pump pressure is used to inflate the diaphragm and compress the cake. The cake discharge is by vibration. 

The exit region of a die used to blow plastic film is shown below. If the extruder output is 100 X 10 m /s of polythene at 170°C estimate the total pressure drop in the die between points A and C. Also calculate the dimensions of the plastic bubble produced. It may be assumed that there is no inflation or draw-down of the bubble. Flow data for polythene is given in Fig. 5.3.

Griest (1979) has discussed the effects of inflation on profitability analysis and has pointed out that the percentage change in profits after income taxes rarely increases at the rate of inflation, largely due to the effects of taxation. Assumptions about inflation can change the relative ranking of project alternatives based on net present value special techniques based on probability may be required because inflation is difficult to predict.

In Figure 4.33 we could observe somewhat inflated residuals for some objects. This might be data points that are less reliable, and a model fit with PCR or PLS can be unduly influenced by such outliers. The idea of robust PLS (Section 4.7.7) is to downweight atypical objects that cause deviations from the assumptions used for the classical methods.

At this point it is difficult to predict the direction in which the environment will move over the next three to five years.
