Inflatable goods

Polyolefin, PO, blends with copolymers of vinyl acetate and acrylate esters, EVAc (20 0 wt% VAc), were extruded into films, weldable by high-frequency currents. It replaced PVC flexible films, e.g., in inflatable goods. For example, 400 pm PVC film, inflated to 100 m bars, after 13 days, had lost 72 wt% of the pressure, while the new blends (15 wt% VAc in the blend) of 200 pm film lost 50 wt% in 19 days ... 

Published figures for inflation rates are based on some particular mixture of goods and sei vices that is chosen to represent the material wants of the average citizen. If a given quantity of this specific mixture cost 100 last year and now costs 120, then the mix has suffered a 20 percent rate of inflation. The purchasing power of the currency (i.e., of the 120) in respecl of these goods and sei vices has consequently fallen by a factor of ( 120 — 100)/ 120, or 16.7 percent. 

Another instance of differential inflation occurs when the prices of goods and services rise uniformly but the cost of borrowing money, the interest rate charged on a loan, does not rise. 

If the fractional inflation rate is a fractional interest rate on a loan can be corrected to an effective rate of interest by Eq. (9-116) with ii substituted for (DCFRR). The effect of various amounts of loan, borrowed at various interest rates ii, on the net present value of a particular, fairly simple project is shown in Fig. 9-37. Thus, if 25,000 were borrowed at an interest rate of 15 percent for the project, the (NPV) would be about 43,000 at a zero inflation rate. But if the inflation for goods and services i, is 10 percent, the effective interest rate for that loan can be calculated from Eq. (9-116) to be only 4.55 percent. It is seen from Fig. 9-37 that this increases the (NPV) of the project to 48,000. This confirms the economic advantage of borrowing at a fixed interest rate in a time of general inflation. 

Due to its balance of strength, oil resistance, inflammability, increased resistance to ozone, ageing and weathering, polychloroprene finds widespread industrial use. Typical uses are V-belts, conveyor belts, wire and cable jacketing, footwear, wet suit applications, coated fabrics, inflatables, hoses, extrusions and many other goods. Adhesives are also a strong market area. 

On the other hand, the reaction of iron with oxygen to form rust proceeds quite slowly. Most Canadians know that the combination of road salt and wet snow somewhat increases the rate of the reaction. Even so, it takes several years for a significant amount of rust to form on the body of a car. This is a good thing for car owners—if rusting occurred as fast as the reaction in an inflating air bag, cars would flake to pieces in seconds. 

A good professional can correctly repair the most-common thermoplastic parts, such as piping, geomembranes, inflatable boats and structures, by welding or gluing patches after removal of the soiled and damaged part. 

Although it is beyond the scope of this presentation, it can be shown that if the model yj. = 0 + r, is a true representation of the behavior of the system, then the three sui.. s of squares SS and divided by the associated degrees of freedom (2, 1, and 1 respectively for this example) will all provide unbiased estimates of and there will not be significant differences among these estimates. If y, = 0 + r, is not the true model, the parameter estimate will still be a good estimate of the purely experimental uncertainty, (the estimate of purely experimental uncertainty is independent of any model - see Sections 5.5 and 5.6). The parameter estimate however, will be inflated because it now includes a non-random contribution from a nonzero difference between the mean of the observed replicate responses, y, and the responses predicted by the model, y, (see Equation 6.13). The less likely it is that y, - 0 + r, is the true model, the more biased and therefore larger should be the term Si f compared to 5. ...
