Fault trees work backwards from a single undesired event to its causes (Figure 7). Fault trees are commonly used in risk assessment to help infer the chance of an accident occurring (Hammer 1993 Gertman and Blackman 1994). Inference trees relate a set of hypotheses at the top level of the tree to evidence depicted at the lower levels. This latter approach has been used by expert systems, such as PROSPECTOR (Duda et al. 1979). PROSPECTOR applies a Bayesian approach to infer the presence of a mineral deposit from uncertain evidence. [Pg.2189]
