Inducing factors development

Now that an haustorial inducing factor has been characterized in a host plant that could be grown in the laboratory, the levels of the compounds actually exuded could be analyzed. John Steffens and Rody Spivey focused on developing methods that would allow for suitable quantitation. Efforts were made to quantitate not only the terpenoid components, but also the flavanoid, genistein (4, 5,7-trihydroxyiso-flavone), which was found to be a major isoflavone of Lespedeza. Genistein was analyzed to gain an estimate of levels of phenylpro-... [Pg.71]

Radiation is one of the most important known environmental stimuli of cancer development. This environmental factor becomes especially dangerous for humans living in the areas affected by irradiation from nuclear accidents. Earlier we found that the administration of a mixture of vitamin E and a-lipoic acid to children living in the area of Chernobyl nuclear accident significantly and synergistically suppressed leukocyte oxygen radical overproduction [211]. Thus a-lipoic acid and a-lipoic acid + vitamin E supplements may be of interest as antioxidant preventive agents for the treatment of radiation-induced cancer development. [Pg.930]

In the slime mould, Dictyostelium discoideum, a STAT-like DNA-binding protein, DIF (the differentiation-inducing factor), is expressed. DIF is about 700 amino-acid residues long, and has substantial homology with mammalian STATs. DIF is, like STAT, activated by phosphorylation of tyrosines. It is essential for differentiation of the stalk cells of D. discoideum A The long evolutionary path that the STATs have travelled from Dictyostelium to mammals underlines their conserved and essential role as signal transmitters and transcriptional activators in early development. [Pg.117]

Interferon alfa was suspected of having induced the development of anti-factor VIII autoantibodies in one patient with hemophilia who survived and one without hemophilia who subsequently died from acute hemorrhage (SED-13,1094) (237,238). [Pg.1807]
