Another strategy involving tandem radical reactions that offers an advantage of multiple carbon-carbon bond formation in a single operation in the aqueous medium tandem construction of carbon-carbon bonds has been widely being studied by Naito and co-workers (Scheme 7.12). The indium-mediated tandem... [Pg.79]

The same group reported indium-mediated tandem radical addition-cyclization-trap reactions in aqueous media [52c], The use of water-soluble radical initiator 2,2 -azobis[2-(2-imidazolin-2-yl)propane], water-soluble chain carrier 1-ethyl-piperidinium hypophosphite (EPHP) and surfactant cetylammonium bromide (CTAB) allowed the C-C bond-forming radical reactions of highly hydrophobic substrates in water [53], Similarly, the use of CTAB and EPHP in presence of 4,4 -azobis(4-cyanovaleric acid) promoted the indium-mediated radical addition to P-substituted conjugated alkenes in water [54]. [Pg.44]

Clerici and Porta reported that phenyl, acetyl and methyl radicals add to the Ca atom of the iminium ion, PhN+Me=CHMe, formed in situ by the titanium-catalyzed condensation of /V-methylanilinc with acetaldehyde to give PhNMeCHMePh, PhNMeCHMeAc, and PhNMeCHMe2 in 80% overall yield.83 Recently, Miyabe and co-workers studied the addition of various alkyl radicals to imine derivatives. Alkyl radicals generated from alkyl iodide and triethylborane were added to imine derivatives such as oxime ethers, hydrazones, and nitrones in an aqueous medium.84 The reaction also proceeds on solid support.85 A-sulfonylimines are also effective under such reaction conditions.86 Indium is also effective as the mediator (Eq. 11.49).87 A tandem radical addition-cyclization reaction of oxime ether and hydrazone was also developed (Eq. 11.50).88 Li and co-workers reported the synthesis of a-amino acid derivatives and amines via the addition of simple alkyl halides to imines and enamides mediated by zinc in water (Eq. 11.51).89 The zinc-mediated radical reaction of the hydrazone bearing a chiral camphorsultam provided the corresponding alkylated products with good diastereoselectivities that can be converted into enantiomerically pure a-amino acids (Eq. 11.52).90... [Pg.358]

An indium-mediated radical cyclization sequence has been used to synthesize stereoselectively 3-alkylideneoxindoles [65, 66]. The generation of predominantly the i -isomer, such as seen with 96 below, is attributed to the strong coordination of the indium to the carbonyl of the oxindole intermediate, and the transformation of various iodo-ynamides to the cyclized oxindoles occurred in good yield. Selective approaches to the E- and disubstituted 3-alkylideneoxindoles involving a tandem palladium-catalyzed cross coupling reaction were also highlighted in this report. [Pg.253]

Certain Lewis acids are known to induce an epoxide-aldehyde rearrangement <01TL8129>, and this chemistry has recently been combined in tandem with metal-mediated allylations. For example, epoxides react with tetraallyltin in the presence of bismuth(III) triflate to give homoallylic alcohols 116. The reaction involves an initial 1,2-shift to form an aldehyde 115, which is then attacked by the allyl tin species <03TL6501>. A similar but operationally more straightforward protocol is available by combining allyl bromide with indium metal, followed by the addition of epoxide <03TL2911>. [Pg.70]

Other metal-mediated reactions of azide reagents to terminal alkynes have also been reported. Indium(ll) triflate catalyzed tandem azidation/l,3-dipolar cycloaddition of various (o,(o-dialkoxyalkynes 134 with trimethylsilyl azide yielded fused 1,2,3-triazoles 135 <05TL8639>. A new ruthenium-catalyzed process for the regioselective synthesis of 1,5-disubstituted-1,2,3-triazoles has been developed <05JA15998>. [Pg.233]
