Indigofera

Aniline was first isolated in 1826 as a degradation prod uct of indigo a dark blue dye obtained from the West Indian plant Indigofera anil from which the name aniline IS derived... 

Indigo was originally made from two plants. One is woad, Isatis tinctoria, a native of Greece and Italy, and the other is indigo, Indigofera tinctoria, a native of India. At the end of the nineteenth century, German scientists synthesized the dye, and production from plant sources declined. Most of the dye today comes from China.

Organic dyes like indigo, madder (source of red) and woad can easily attach themselves to cloth. Indigo dye is extracted from the leaves of the plant indigofera, and the red dye from the madder plant. Madder plant has yellow flowers and red root. The dye is extracted from the root.
