Indicator copy paper

Phthalide derivatives are of major importance in the dye industry, particularly in the area of recording material color formers. Pressure-sensitive carbonless copy paper and thermal recording paper are typical applications. Five principal structural classes have been developed extensively the xanthene dyes (fluorans (208)), 3,3-diarylphthalides (209), spirofluorenes (210), 3,3-bis(di-arylethylene)phthalides (211), and 3-substituted phthalides <84Mi 208-03>. Some of these structures are common to many familiar acid/base indicators, dyes, biological stains, or laser dyes such as fluorescein (212) and phenolphthalein (213) ,... 

Carbonless copy paper has an acid-base indicator inside polymeric microcapsules stuck to the underside of the upper sheet of paper. When you write on the upper sheet, the pressure of your pen breaks the microcapsules on the bottom side to release indicator.

The term issue in the context of documents means that copies of the document are distributed. You will of course wish to issue draft documents for comment but obviously they cannot be reviewed and approved beforehand. The sole purpose of issuing draft documents is to solicit comments. The requirement should be that the documents are reviewed and approved prior to use. Some organizations insist that even drafts are approved for issue. Others go further and insist that copies cannot be taken from unapproved documents. This is nonsense and not what is intended by the standard. Your draft documents need to look different from the approved versions either by using letter issue notation (a common convention) or by printing on colored or watermark paper. If the approved document would carry signatures, the absence of any signature indicates that the document is not approved.

Another common problem is the failure to understand that, when using a merged system (some combination of paper and electronic records), both are the real SOPs, protocols, etc. As SOPs and protocols are transferred from paper to electronic media, frequently a signed, hard copy and an approved electronic version of the same document are maintained. Users of merged systems must remember that one must be able to demonstrate that the paper and electronic versions of an SOP, protocol, etc., are exactly the same. For example, if the SOP is signed on a certain date, the electronic version must also indicate that approval occurred on the same date. This means that a procedure (i.e., SOP) for ensuring document equivalency must be available and followed. 

In recent years, much work has been devoted to the identification and interpretation of infra-red spectra by computer. Collections of spectra on paper can be converted into a numerical form (digitised) and recorded on a disk or tape, and many modem infrared spectrophotometers record the spectra directly in digital form. The use of a data station coupled to an infra-red spectrophotometer enables the spectrum to be matched automatically against those in the library collection, and the names of compounds giving the closest fit displayed. An indication of the closeness of fit may also be given. It is important that the identification is checked by a careful comparison of the spectrum with a printed copy of that of the compound(s) indicated. 

When you send your revised manuscript to the editor for reconsideration, send a copy of the old version with the changes indicated so that the editor can quickly and easily see how the review s have been addressed. For the same purpose, also include copies of the reviews with their criticisms numbered, and a separate point-by-point response to each referee suitable for sending to the referee. Often an editor, with such a detailed response in hand, will be able to make an on-the-spot decision about accepting the paper.

To understand the design and function of a chemical plant it is a useful preliminary to study the flow diagram (sometimes called a flow sheet). Its purpose is to illustrate diagrammatically, on one sheet of paper, all the items of equipment required for a chemical process or series of processes to be operated. Items are represented by simple symbols which are usually those recommended by the British Standard 974 1953 and subsequent editions (your supervisor may have a copy). The route of materials through the equipment is indicated by arrows and interconnecting lines and, in some instances, the materials of construction, size or capacity, flow rates, power requirements, and pipe dimensions are also shown.
