Elame-spread and smoke-density values, and the less often reported fuel-contributed semiquantitive results of the ASTM E84 test and the limited oxygen index (LOI) laboratory test, are more often used to compare fire performance of ceUular plastics. AH building codes requite that ceUular plastics be protected by inner or outer sheathings or be housed in systems aH with a specified minimum total fire resistance. Absolute incombustibHity cannot be attained in practice and often is not requited. The system approach to protecting the more combustible materials affords adequate safety in the buildings by aHowing the occupant sufficient time to evacuate before combustion of the protected ceUular plastic. 

Carbon monoxide chemisorption was used to estimate the surface area of metallic iron after reduction. The quantity of CO chemisorbed was determined [6J by taking the difference between the volumes adsorbed in two isotherms at 195 K where there had been an intervening evacuation for at least 30 min to remove the physical adsorption. Whilst aware of its arbitrariness, we have followed earlier workers [6,10,11] in assuming a stoichiometry of Fe CO = 2.1 to estimate and compare the surface areas of metallic iron in our catalysts. As a second index for this comparison we used reactive N2O adsorption, N20(g) N2(g) + O(ads), the method widely applied for supported copper [12]. However, in view of the greater reactivity of iron, measurements were made at ambient temperature and p = 20 Torr, using a static system. 

IDLH (immediately dangerous to life and health) is an index of exposure used in the United States. If such a concentration is reached, there is a need for emergency evacuation of buildings or use of an insulating mask. 

Temperature Sensing. As shown in Fig. 16, a layer of silicon (whose refractive index changes with temperature) is placed in the optical path in place of the evacuated cavity, as previously described. The second reflector (glass) is rigid. The effective path length thus changes with temperature. 

Cathartics are drugs that are employed in medicine to facilitate evacuation of the bowels. They may act by irritating the intestines or by augmenting the fluid of the feces. In the first instance, intestinal peristalsis is increased directly, and in the second instance it is increased indirectly by distention of the bowel. They are probably used more than any other class of medicinal compounds. This fact is not an index of their usefulness or value but rather a measure of the misconceptions that exist concerning their worth and the indications for their use. 

Gallium(I) selenide and gallium(I) telluride can be made by melting the elements together in evacuated quartz tubes for prolonged periods their X-ray powder diffraction patterns have been recorded and indexed.
