Cooperation is to achieve unity of motivation (e.g., incentive alignment). In cooperative relationships, the firms might share information, expertise, cost, risk, and reward. Each firm remains completely autonomous from the others. They might change the way they work and learn from others.

Previous researches also support the finding that information sharing (Frankel et al. 2002 Whipple et al. 2002), joint decision-making (Bowersox 1990 Ramdas and Spekman 2000), and incentive alignment (Narus and Anderson 1996 Corbett et al. 1999) facilitate the process efficiency. Higher levels of collaboration result in operational efficiency in supply chain systems in terms of inventory levels and levels of satisfaction (Sheu et al. 2006).
