Impregnated composites

The models could readily be extended to three-phase impregnated composites, where the impregnation of the inclusions constitutes a third thin phase, and two further pseudo-phases may be assumed as developed between inclusions and impregnation, and impregnation and matrix. A consecutive application of the models may yield interesting results concerning the behavior of such impregnated composites.

A 6 mm thick, three layered-radar absorbing architecture exhibiting an attentuation of —10 dB between 5 GHz and 18 GHz could be designed. The dielectric constants were judiciously chosen so that the external layer was transparent (non-impregnated composite 4 GHz = 4 — jO) whereas the internal layer was totally absorbing (E4 GHz=12—J29) (Figure 8.42). Another area where composites have moved into the ski disciplines is in race protection, such as arm and leg guards used in downhill skiing. Pre-impregnated composites have made it possible for the textile structure to be modelled into custom shapes and then formed, offering greater and more complex formabihty as well as customisability. 

Several composites have been prepared by introducing a polymer film at the interface between aqueous ferric chloride and pyrrole diluted in an organic solvent [22,335]. This method allows the preparation of polypyrrole-impregnated composites of clots and paper as well as other polymers, including ionomeric membranes [336]. Polymerization of pyrrole into the porous matrix of cellophane has also been attempted by this method, giving flexible composites of high conductivities [337].

Counter top. The counter top used in the hood is similar to the counter tops used for laboratory benches, and is available in various materials, including epoxy-impregnated composite, stone, transite, or stainless steel. Tops can be provided with flat surfaces, or with marine edges which form a dished surface to contain spills.
