So much for one chiral centre. The problems really begin when you come up against molecules which have two or more chiral centres With two chiral centres, we can construct four possible stereoisomers. These can be separated into two enantiomeric pairs (indistinguishable by NMR). But, (key sentence coming up) if we compare one member of each of these enantiomeric pairs, we will find that they may be distinguished from each other by NMR, because they are diastereoisomers. Diastereoisomers are stereoisomers which are not mirror images of each other - they are different compounds with distinct physical and chemical properties. This is a member of an interesting class of compounds which are chiral, without actually containing a defined chiral centre. They are chiral because their mirror images are non-superimposable. In the case of this molecule, there is no rotation about the bond between the two naphthol rings because of the steric interaction between the two hydroxyl groups, d and T forms can be isolated and are perfectly stable (Optical purity determination by H NMR, D. QDs excited by single or multiple photons exhibit multixponen-tial decays, in our hands generally with two components of <10 and 10-25 ns. This property renders the nanoparticles useful reagents for the systematic modulation of emission via a technique we have denoted as photochromic FRET (pcFRET, Fig. 12.5 see [1, 2, 134]). One of the earliest direct bonuses of imaging zeolitic catalysts by HRTEM was the discovery (10) that the nominally phase-pure ZSM-5 (structure code MFI) contained sub-unit-cell coherent intergrowths of ZSM-11 (MEL). It soon became apparent (46) that, depending on the mode of synthesis of these and other pentasil (zeolitic) catalysts, some specimens of ZSM-5 contained recurrent (regular) intergrowths of ZSM-11. It also emerged that intergrowths of offretite and erionite are features of both nominally phase-pure erionite and of pure offretite and of many members of the so-called ABC-6 family of zeolites (47). [Pg.210]

After a considerable construction time the olfactometers became available for use. With these olfactometers and a recently created sniffing room at the IMAG premises, the poultry house odour research was repeated with a panel of eight observers. The necessary diluting air was obtained from a rotary vane compressor. Filtration of the compressed air was applied. The experimental procedures made it possible to use all panel members at the time.
