Illegal salt

So when someone warns that there is antifreeze in your toothpaste, ask which antifreeze. Some are illegal adulterants added by criminal cost-cutters, and their products are quickly recalled. Others (like glycerin, propylene glycol, or salt) are generally recognized as safe and are reasonable household ingredients. [Pg.282]

Illegal production of cocaine is fairly unsophisticated, but can result in material of high quality. The alkaloids are extracted from crushed leaf using alkali (lime) and petrol. The petrol extract is then re-extracted with aqueous acid, and this alkaloid fraction is basified and allowed to stand, yielding the free alkaloid as a paste. Alternatively, the hydrochloride or sulphate salts may be prepared. The coca alkaloids are often diluted with carrier to give a... [Pg.302]

Barium salts added to increase (illegally) the final weight and to give artificial whiteness to raw or pre-processed down. [Pg.23]

The bill was labeled an act to provide for the registration of, with collectors of internal revenue, and to impose a special tax upon all persons who produce, import, manufacture, compound, deal in, dispense, sell, distribute, or give away opium or coca leaves, their salts, derivatives, or preparations. Rather than making opium or cocaine illegal, the Harrison Act instead allowed doctors and pharmacists to continue to prescribe narcotics, and manufacturers and importers to continue to meet this demand, provided that they registered with the internal revenue office and paid the fee of one dollar per year. (At the time cocaine was incorrectly labeled as a narcotic. )... [Pg.24]

Paraquat and diquat are dipyridyl herbicides used for weed control and as preharvest (desiccant) defoliants. Paraquat has been used for large-scale control of illegal marijuana growing. Dipyridyl product fonnulations differ by country. In the United States, paraquat has been available as a concentrated (29-44%) liquid. Diquat is found in aqueous concentrates containing 8-37.3% of the herbicide. Granular fonnulations containing a 2.5% mixture of paraquat and diquat salts are also available. [Pg.296]

A piperidine derivative, P-eucaine (56), is used as a local anesthetic. The illegal designer drug MPTP (l-methyl-4-phenyl-l,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine, 57) contains the six-membered ring heterocycle and is particularly dangerous because it is converted to a metabolite, pyridinium salt 58 (MPP), in the body. This metabolite is associated with irreversible Parkinsonism. MPP is classified as a dopaminergic neurotoxin. [Pg.1327]

In conclusion, it can be said that mercury poisoning has only occurred after illegal use of dressed seed grain or where the illegal introduction of mercurial salts into the water exposed the population to severely contaminated food. Further poisonings, especially as the result of contaminated fish, have not been observed up to now. This is most certainly to some extent the result of preventive measures. For example in Sweden and North America upper permissable limits e.g. in fish have been fixed, although this meant considerable losses for certain branches of the economy. [Pg.145]

The difficulties in the production and quality maintenance of iodized salt for the millions who are iodine deficient, especially in Asia, were vividly demonstrated in India, where there was a breakdown in supply. These difficulties led to the adoption of universal salt iodization (USI) for India and subsequently for many other countries. This policy includes legislation to provide for compulsory iodization of all salt for human and animal consumption, and this legislation makes it illegal for noniodized salt to be available for human or animal consumption. [Pg.231]
