Development of useful shortcut methods by intuitive and evolutionary mental analysis alone must surely be extremely fulfilling. We will see later how other devel-opmentally oriented individuals are able to build upon the original shortcut method ideas to create variations on the theme for specific applications. 

The title of this three-part volume derives from a key theme of the book—the logic underlying the rational analysis of complex synthetic problems. Although the book deals almost exclusively with molecules of biological origin, which are ideal for developing the fundamental ideas of multistep synthetic design because of their architectural complexity and variety, the approach taken is fully applicable to other types of carbon-based structures. 

The simpler the idea, the more names, could be the theme of this seetion. The overriding idea is simple. For similar reactions the more exothermic (endothermic)... 

Second, Max Dresden, who was both my thesis advisor and loyal friend. As Jay was the perfect teacher of high school physics, so Max was the quintessential physics professor. Max opened my eyes to the deej) mystery we call the universe, and taught me that the path to truth is indistinguishable from the path to beauty. The seminal idea and outline of this book-its major themes, chapters, and overall organization -benefitted greatly from Max s experience and wise counsel. I have followed our bible of ideas ever since Max and I lovingly crafted a skeletal version of it prior to our first meeting with a potential publisher over a decade ago. 

With its jockey theme, gentleman receptionist and drinking-cartoon Bar Room, the 21 Club, a former speakeasy on East 52nd Street, is a touchstone for the particularly metropolitan idea of a restaurant with a tacit membership—the only survivor of a saloon-society heyday that included the Stork Club and El Morocco. 

Indeed contributions of this issue can be classified into three different groups i) new developments of old themes with different approaches and ideas (Chaps. 1 and 6), ii) state of the art for two topics of general interest (Chaps. 2 and 3), and iii) emerging fields of research (Chaps. 4 and 5). 

Examples of approaches followed by a small selection of the major RM developers are provided below and summarized in Table 3.2. It must be emphasized that these assignments are based on the author s interpretation of approaches described in the literature that placing into one of the approaches defined in this paper is not always feasible due to cross-over between different modes, fusion of ideas from one and another, elimination of steps, selective choices of parameters, modification of parameters, and streamlining of the overall procedure. Variations on a theme are unavoidable. In assigning certification approaches, the numbers refer to the approaches defined above multiple numbers indicate a blending of two or more modes with a asterisk indicating the author s assignment of the dominant mode of certification.

The conventions of chemistry, particularly physical chemistry, are standard and appear in all physical chemistry textbooks and will be used here. The same courtesy has been extended to organic and inorganic chemistry and biology, so that the ideas of these subjects can be linked into the common theme. 

The theme of this book is not a reformulation of theoretical physics, but an attempt to identify the theoretical ideas fundamental to chemistry and recast them in more familiar style. There is no doubt but, that the chemist of this century will have to be familiar with the concepts that appear to be new, even alien, at present. The philosophy that inspires this work is that specialization in science is detrimental in the long term. Specialization may well stimulate productivity in the short term, but this productivity becomes sterile in the absence of innovation, that depends on cross-pollenation, or the adoption of new theoretical models. 

Consideration of the origins and evolution of chemosensation can help one to begin to understand the themes of olfaction and chemical communication that are common to diverse phyletic groups. This section emphasizes ideas that were propounded with characteristic clarity and elegance by the late Vincent Dethier in his 1990 R. H. Wright Lectures on Olfaction. Because the published version of those lectures (1) may not be widely accessible, some of Dethier s main points are restated here.
