The stmctures of STP-I and -II differ primarily in the ionic coordination of cations. In STP-II all sodium ions are octahedraHy coordinated by oxygen, whereas in STP-I some sodium ions are surrounded by only four oxygen atoms. In STP-II a distinct sheet-like arrangement occurs. The faster hydration rates are attributed to these properties. [Pg.337]

Considerable effort has been devoted to finding alternative fibers or minerals to replace asbestos fibers ia their appHcations. Such efforts have been motivated by various reasons, typically, avadabihty and cost, and more recendy, health concerns. During Wodd War I, some countries lost access to asbestos fiber suppHes and had to develop substitute materials. Also, ia the production of fiber reiaforced cement products, many developiug countries focused on alternatives to asbestos fibers, ia particular on cellulose fibers readily available locally at minimal cost. Siace the 1980s however, systematic research has been pursued ia several iudustrialized countries to replace asbestos fibers ia all of their current appHcations because of perceived health risks. [Pg.355]

The earliest SIS block copolymers used in PSAs were nominally 15 wt% styrene, with an overall molecular weight on the order of 200,000 Da. The preparation by living anionic polymerization starts with the formation of polystyryl lithium, followed by isoprene addition to form the diblock anion, which is then coupled with a difunctional agent, such as 1,2-dibromoethane to form the triblock (Fig. 5a, path i). Some diblock material is inherently present in the final polymer due to inefficient coupling. The diblock is compatible with the triblock and acts... [Pg.480]

This value refers to the natural mixture of uranium isotopes, i.e. it is the atomic weight. Variations are possible because (i) some geological samples have anomalous isotopic compositions, and (ii) commercially available samples may have been depleted in The value for itself is 238.0508. [Pg.1263]

Great progress has been made in the experimental and theoretical investigation of tautomerism of five-membered ring systems since 1975, and a number of reviews dealing partly or entirely with this subject have appeared since then. In Table I some pertinent references are given. [Pg.86]

Both structures II and III have an arrangement of atoms that places a positive formal charge on atoms that are higher in electronegativity than carbon. Consequently, the most stable arrangement of atoms is as shown in structure I. Some compounds containing the ion having structure III (the fulminate ion) are known, but they are much less stable than the cyanates (structure I). In fact, mercury fulminate has been used as a detonator. [Pg.110]

We continue our theme of coffee . Most coffees contain a large amount of the heterocyclic stimulant caffeine (I). Some people prefer to decrease the amounts of caffeine they ingest for health reasons, or they simply do not like to consume it at all, and they ask for decaffeinated coffee instead. [Pg.189]

The reaction of bare metal ions with sulfur has received some attention. The reaction of metal ions with elemental sulfur (S8) was first studied by Freiser and his co-worker (110) in the study of Fe+ with S8. This reaction produced the ions [FeSJ+, where x = 1-10, which under collision-induced dissociation experiments were observed to undergo sequential loss of S2 units. It has been suggested that Fe(S2)5 + would result in the unreasonable oxidation state of Fe(XI) (9). The S2 unit is similar to the 02 molecule with two unpaired electrons and could act as a neutral ligand (not an anion S2 or dianion) and the oxidation state of Fe in the ion Fe(S2)5 + would be (I). Some similar ions have also been produced by the reaction of Fe+ with ethene sulfide, QH4S. The results for Fe+ have now been confirmed in a study of all the transition metals cations (except Tc+) reacting with gaseous sulfur (50, 150). The study shows that [MS4]+ was a common first major ion (some reac-... [Pg.376]
