In contrast to the Hythane production technology (HMM with lower hydrogen content), the proposed HMM technology provides for production of final product not through mixture of natural gas with pure hydrogen produced at a separate facility, but in one run through SMR that considerably simplifies and decreases the cost of production. 

One commercially available gas mixture known as Hythane contains 20% hydrogen and 80% natural gas. At this ratio, no modifications are required to a natural gas engine, and studies have shown that emissions are reduced by more than 20%. Mixtures of more than 20% hydrogen with natural gas can reduce emissions further but some engine modifications are required. 

P3-1A Bus Fuel Appliance, which produces up to 1,400 scfh at 4,000 psig, has operated for over 2,000 hours and produced over 2.5 million SCF of hydrogen fuel. The appliance has been used to fuel a variety of hydrogen and Hythane vehicles operated at SunLine (Figure 2).

The data on methane -I- hydrogen -t- oxygen self-ignition in [26] have no hint of the scenario illustrated in Fig. 6.18. Therefore, it can be assumed that self-ignition characteristics of hythane-like mixtures at practicable conditions have been not investigated.
