Hypotension remedies

The decoction of the leaves of Olea europea L. has been used empirically as hypotensive remedy. Early experimental studies showed that extracts of Olea europea L. leaves possess hypotensive, antiarhythmic, vasodilator effects [99-101] and produced some evidence that oleuropein... [Pg.725]

In 1918 the traditional Indian remedy rauwolfia was reported to be useful in the treatment of hypertension. Reexamination of this material led to the isolation of reserpine (28 R1 = Me, R2 = 3,4,5-trimethoxybenzoyl) which was shown in 1952 to have hypotensive and tranquilizing effects. Other alkaloids such as deserpidine (28 R1 = H, R2 = 3,4,5-trimethoxybenzoyl) and rescinnamine (28 R1 = Me, R2 = 3,4,5-trimethoxycinnamoyl) were later isolated. They are useful when alternative, more potent drugs are not well tolerated. [Pg.149]

When diuretics are abused it is mostly in the course of a misguided attempt to lose weight in the past, various slimming remedies offered for sale outside normal trading channels have been found to contain diuretics, sometimes with components such as thyroid extract. The unnecessary use of diuretics by a healthy individual, perhaps in excessive doses, can lead to dehydration, hypokalemia, and hypotension when furosemide is abused, even tetany can occur because of hypocalcemia (126). The weight loss achieved by using diuretics in this way is purely due to dehydration and will soon be annulled by extra fluid intake. [Pg.1162]

Both ephedrine and pseudoephedrine remain worry-ingly popular (4) and are widely available without prescription. Based on increasing evidence of the risks of Ephedra self-medication, various national regulatory authorities are currently considering recalling Ephedra products from over-the-counter sales. Oral doses of ephedrine 25-30 mg are often prescribed, for example for orthostatic hypotension. Lower oral doses, present in some cold remedies in tablet form, are unlikely to be efficacious, although they are risky where the drug is... [Pg.1221]

The hypotensive effect of reserpine is used in severe hypertension, nowadays in low doses in combination with other antihypertensives. Its sedative and relaxant effect has been used in the treatment of psychoses. Reserpine was the first useful remedy in the treatment of psychosis and opened up the road for modern psychopharmacotherapy, which has drastically changed the treatment of psychiatric patients. [Pg.78]

Laminaria possesses remarkable properties that make it a wonderful component of dietary supplements. Due to its amazing medicinal benefits, it has been used in traditional Chinese medicine since centuries and is listed in the Chinese pharmacopeia. In general. Laminaria is considered as a cold, salty herb, prescribed to cleanse heat, resolve phlegm, and soften and disperse hard accumulations (e.g., goiters). It is often used to control edema, as an expectorant and antitussive, and as a remedy for testicular pain and swelling. Despite its salty character, the herb is slightly hypotensive. [Pg.91]
