Hydrophobic lubricating agents

Addition of wetting agents such as sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium docusate can assist this water penetration by lowering the surface tension, and they are often used in conjunction with hydrophobic lubricants such as magnesium stearate (see the article on Tablet Disintegrants and Disintegration in this encyclopedia). 

Some of the more common antifrictional agents are listed in Table 10. Many of these are hydrophobic and may consequently affect the release of medicament. Therefore, lubricant concentration and mixing time should be kept to the absolute minimum. Lubricants may also reduce significantly the mechanical strength of the tablet (see Fig. 12) [29,81]. An exception to this is the preparation of special leathers, where a suitable chromium-conplexing agent, e.g. a hydrophobic ligand, may be used to impart a required property, e.g. shower resistance or lubrication, to the finished hide1208 and similarly the use of fluorocarboxy-lates to produce soil-resistant leathers.
