Hydrophobic Effect-Based Recognition

Piletsky, S.A. Andersson, H.S. Nicholls, LA. The rational use of hydrophobic effect-based recognition in molecularly imprinted polymers. J. Mol. Recogn. 1998, 11, 94-97. Hughes, M.P. Smith, B.D. Enhanced carboxylate binding using urea and amide-based receptors with internal Lewis acid coordination a cooperative polarization effect. J. Org. Chem. 1997, 62, 4492-4499. [Pg.92]

Methylcytosine The 5-methyl hydrophobic effect was used to inhibit the recognition of double-hehcal DNA by prokaryotic modifying enzymes and a eukaryotic transcription factor via ohgonucleotide-directed triple-helix formation in which ODNs containing m C conferred substantially more efficient inhibition than those with C [22]. Triple-heUx formation also selectively protects the DNA duplex from restriction methylation, and the specificity of 15 base pairs is useful for chromosome mapping. [Pg.282]

The separation factor relies on the design of the active sites on the resins and the solution chemistry. Mechanisms contributing to chemical selectivity reportedly include the hard-soft acid-base principle (HSAB), hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity selectivity, and pore size recognition. These mechanisms have common characteristics and their effects are thus not easy to distinguish. [Pg.276]
