Test the air for the presence and concentration of H2S and ensure that monitoring is being performed as necessary. The testing should be performed by a qualified person using air monitoring equipment, such as hydrogen sulfide detector tubes or a mrdti-gas meter that detects the gas. Testing should also determine if fire or explosion precautions are necessary. 

Elemental composition H 5.92%, S 94.08. Hydrogen sulfide may be distinguished by its characteristic odor. The gas turns a paper soaked in lead acetate solution black. Many infrared sensors are commercially available for in-situ measurements of H2S. It may be monitored semiquantitatively by Draeger tubes. It also may be analyzed by GC following trapping over molecular sieves and thermal desorption. Either a flame photometric detector or a sulfur chemiluminescence detector may be used for GC analysis. It may be separated on a capillary column such as Carboxen 1006 PLOT or SPB-1 SULFUR (Supelco Catalog 1999 Supelco Inc., BeUefonte, PA).

Detector tubes are usually subject to interferences from gases and vapors other than the target substance. Such interferences may vary among brands due to the use of different detection principles. Many detector tubes will have a precleanse layer designed to remove interferences up to some maximum level. Consult manufacturer s instructions for specific interference information. Hydrogen sulfide and other mercaptans are usually interferences on mercaptan detector tubes. See Section 5 for interferences of various methods of detection. 

Interference from hydrogen sulfide gas (H2S) is a common problem with mercaptan detector tubes and its extent should be understood in order to make use of tube readings. There are at least three detection principles used in mercaptan detector tubes and each is summarized below.
