Hydrogen spectrum origin

This fluorescence and phosphorescence (curve IVa and IVb) originate only from those excited molecules whose intramolecular hydrogen bond is broken. This is proven by the phosphorescence excitation spectrum where the long wavelength band (intramolecular hydrogen bond) is lacking, Fig. 5, curve II. 

Note that Marechal [48,75] proposed an original peeling-off procedure, but in a very different perspective, whose purpose is to eliminate from a given experimental spectrum the features brought by multiple Fermi resonances, thus revealing the intrinsic informations on the hydrogen bond dynamics. 

Although it proved possible to conclude from the results of further experiments with the perester that succinimidyl radicals from this source could abstract benzylic hydrogen from toluene, the reaction system presented further difficulties which are still unresolved. For example, when solutions of NBS and MBN are mixed in the dark, a high concentration of [32] is immediately produced. Whilst this helped to establish the origin of the 27-line spectrum, it constitutes a fresh mechanistic puzzle. 

A quite different approach came from Chance and others using heme enzymes (1947). Purified horseradish peroxidase has a characteristic absorption spectrum which was visibly altered in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. When an appropriate substrate was added it was oxidized by the hydrogen peroxide and the spectrum reverted to that of the original state of the enzyme. Similar studies were performed with catalase, showing that prosthetic groups in enzymes underwent reversible changes in the course of their reactions. 

We also examined the effects of various heat treatments in both reducing and oxidizing atmospheres. An indochinite reduced for 12 hours in a hydrogen atmosphere at 950 °C. yielded the Mossbauer spectrum displayed in Figure 5. The curve shown is the result of the computer fit the data points are not given, but the closeness of fit is about the same as in the other spectra. The spectrum clearly shows that a certain amount of the original tektite remains the two broad lines at —0.11 and 1.83 mm./sec. match the original tektite lines closely.
