Hydrogen production from electrolysis of water powered from a wind energy system depends on the wind potential of the site that the plant is installed. Planning of these stations should be accompanied by an elaborate analysis of the wind regime of the area to have a substantiated view of the amount of hydrogen that will be produced. In wind energy systems that are already in operation, it is easier to make this assessment and to conclude about the size of the electrolysis and storage equipment. 

Alternative fuels can be used to power a fuel cell such as hydrogen, methane, natural gas, methanol, ethanol, liquehed petroleum gas and landfill gas, which can be produced from renewable energy sources such as biomass and wind. 

In the committee s analysis, it considered wind deployed on a distributed scale, thus bypassing the extra costs and requirements of hydrogen distribution. To calculate the amount of hydrogen produced by electrolysis powered from a wind energy conversion system within a year, the efficiency of the AC/DC (or DC-DC ) conversion 0/c) and the energy consumption of the electrolyzer (ecel) per newton cubic meter of H2 production need to be defined. The efficiency of a standard AC/DC converter ranges from 80% to 95% [41]. High values of t]c occur in the conversion of large amounts of power. Typical values of ecel range from 5 to 6 kWh/Nm3. 

Poul la Cour (1846-1908), a Danish pioneer who constructed the first wind turbine for the generation of electricity, was also probably the first person to supply an electrolyzer with electrical energy from wind turbines to produce hydrogen for gas light [46].
