The biggest relative change in mass of an atom by isotopic substitution is made for replacement of the hydrogen atom (isotope IH) with deuterium (2H isotope). It follows that by sample deuterating, the IR absorption bands associated with chemical bonds in which one of the atom is hydrogen, suffer very significant movement toward smaller wave numbers. [Pg.156]

The simplest system exliibiting a nuclear hyperfme interaction is the hydrogen atom with a coupling constant of 1420 MHz. If different isotopes of the same element exhibit hyperfme couplings, their ratio is detemiined by the ratio of the nuclear g-values. Small deviations from this ratio may occur for the Femii contact interaction, since the electron spin probes the inner stmcture of the nucleus if it is in an s orbital. The ordinary isotope of hydrogen, H, is known as Protium, the other two isotopes are Deuterium (a proton and a neutron) and Tritium (a protron and two neutrons). Hydrogen is the only element whose isotopes have been given different names. Deuterium and Tritium are both used as fuel in nuclear fusion reactors. Other elements have atoms that can have different ratios of protons to neutrons. Indeed, hydrogen actually consists of three types of atoms. All hydrogen atoms have the same number of protons (one for hydrogen), giving each a mass of 1 Dalton, but some atoms of hydrogen also contain one neutron in the nucleus as well as the proton (mass of 2 Da), while yet others have two neutrons with each proton (mass of 3 Da). Thus hydrogen has three naturally occurring isotopes of mass 1, 2, and 3 Da. Chemically, there are only small differences between the reactivities of the different isotopes for any one element. The diffusion of H and D atoms in the molecular crystals of hydrogen isotopes was explored with the EPR method. The atoms were generated by y-irradiation of crystals or by photolysis of a dopant. In the H2 crystals the initial concentration of the hydrogen atoms 4x 10 mol/cm is halved during 10 s at 4.2 K as well as at 1.9 K [Miyazaki et al. 1984 Itskovskii et al. 1986].
