Hydrogen abstraction methacrylate copolymers

Water-based epoxy resins not applied by electrodeposition are mostly of the anodic type and maleinized epoxy esters are frequently used. Another class is the epoxy acrylic graft copolymer, where the epoxy resin is rendered water-soluble by attaching side chains of acrylic polymer containing a high amount of methacrylic acid. The process of grafting is similar to that of chain transfer (p. 67), where acrylic chains are attached by hydrogen abstraction. This process is illustrated in Fig. 14.2, where C- represents a radical site, and represents an extended acrylic chain containing both methacryclic acid and styrene components. [Pg.217]

Reactivity Is typical of an acrylamide. For example, compound 1 shows essentially 1 1 copolymerizablllty with butyl acrylate. Copolymerizablllty has also been demonstrated with styrene, other acrylates and methacrylates, vinyl acetate (VAc), VAc/ethylene and vinyl chlorlde/ethylene. The chain transfer reaction played an important role, particularly because of abstraction of the active hydrogen at a-carbon from the allyl group. Moreover, unreacted double bonds were present in the copolymer obtained. The influence of chain transfer reaction could be diminished by applying multimonomers which do not contain allyl groups. This was shown in the example of copolymerization of multimethacrylate prepared by esterification of poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) with methacryloyl chloride.
