Hydrides of intermetallic

Quantitative predictions about the heats of formation of hydrides of intermetallic compounds have been discussed by Shilov etal. (1989) they studied reversible and irreversible transformations in intermetallic compound-hydrogen systems and observed that four basic types of PIT diagrams exist for these systems. 

Especially interesting are the metallic hydrides of intermetallic compounds, in the simplest case the ternary system because the variation of the elements allows... 

Before closing this section it should be pointed out that the formation of most hydrides of intermetallic compounds is metastable vith respect to disproportionation [35]. Again, taking LaNis as an example, the disproportionation reaction ... 

The formation of hydrides of intermetallic compounds by direct reaction with is carried out at lower T than formation of binary hydrides, and more rapidly. However, disproportionation of the intermetallic compound may occur at elevated T. 

The known hydrides of intermetallics can be classified in a few groups, and the discussion in this section is in terms of those groups. 

Although the AMj CaCuj-type and ABj (MgCUj and MgZn types) compound hydrides are most extensively covered, other hydrides of intermetallics are known (see Table 1). The formation of these hydrides is similar to those of the AMj and ABj hydrides. 

Other hydrides of intermetallic compounds include the A M (A = rare earth, M = Ni, Co) or the MoSi structure intermetallics (where Mo = Cu, Pd Si = Ti, Zr, Hf) , etc. . The formation of these hydrides does not differ from that of those already covered however, because of their technological value, the formation of Mg Ni hydrides is discussed. 

Volume I treats basic properties and volume II is devoted to application-oriented properties. Hydrogen in Intermetallic Compounds I, published in 1988, and Hydrogen in Intermetallic Compounds II, published in 1992, contain perhaps the most comprehensive information on the reversible hydrides of intermetallic compounds and on their applications.[6] Another good review is by Buschow et al.[7] Sandrock has written several fine reviews,[8-10] the comprehensive and highly application-oriented one, published as a Report to the US Office of Naval Research, is especially recommended. Adsorption and absorption of H could induce a surface reconstruction or surface segregation. Single crystal adsorption studies were not yet performed. XPS core level analysis (Fig. 13) of hydrides of intermetallic compounds never gave a significant surface enrichment of one of the components as compared to the pure intermetallic compound (Schlapbach, 1982 Schlapbach et al., 1984), Whenever a surface segregation was observed, oxygen as impurity was also present.
