McMahon The subject hasn t arisen in our discussion, but we should mention homeobox (Hox) genes here. The current model of the profound role that these play is that they regulate sizes and structures. It is a powerful argument that the reason that our radius and ulna are a different size from our humerus is because of the Hox genes that somehow intrinsically control that system. In the absence of the Hox genes, what you get is the formation of the initial anlages but a failure of growth of those structures. [Pg.250]

A seven-month-old child "fell over" while crawling, and now presents with a swollen leg. At age one month, the infant has multiple fractures in various states of healing (right clavicle, right humerus, right radius). At age seven months, the infant has a fracture of a bowed femur, secondary to minor trauma (see x-ray below). The bones are thin, have few trabecula, and thin cortices. A careful family history ruled out nonaccidental trauma (child abuse) as a cause of the bone fractures. The child is most likely to have a defect in ... [Pg.52]

The mechanical properties of cortical bone (specifically, the femur, tibia, humerus, and radius) of various species (specifically, horse, cattle, pig, and human) in tension, compression, and torsion are listed in Table I. It should be noted, for example, that human femur tensile strength (namely, 124 MPa) (Yamada, 1970) is in the same order of magnitude to that of cast iron (170 MPa) (Beer and Johnston, 1981) but, surprisingly, low in weight (Kaplan et al., 1994 Fung, 1993). These unique properties of bone are a direct consequence of the synergy of its molecular, cellular, and tissue arrangement. [Pg.128]

Her x-ray series revealed generalized under-mineralization throughout the bony structures. Her ribs were thin, and the spine showed the presence of multiple compression fractures at the thoracolumbar level. There was marked bowing of all extremities with evidence of old fractures in femurs, humerus, and left ulna. A bone mineral density study of the lumbar vertebral bodies (L1-L4) performed at 5 years of age revealed a value of 6.57 standard deviations below the mean for children of the same age. [Pg.31]

A 38-year-old woman was admitted to hospital in the third week after conception and acute schizophrenia was diagnosed. She was given oral haloperidol 1.5 mg at 12-hourly intervals. In the fourth week after conception, intramuscular depot fluphenazine 12.5 was added every 15 days. At 8 weeks of gestation, after the pregnancy had been diagnosed, haloperidol and fluphenazine were withdrawn and trifluoperazine 5 mg was started and continued until 8 weeks before the baby was bom. The child was bom with phocomelia of the left arm, with an extremely short humerus and an absent forearm. [Pg.229]
