Human Genome, decoding

The secrets of the human genome are just beginning to be uncovered, discovered, understood, and finally utilized. It is an eventful, important trip that we are both witness to and have an essential stake in, and some of us may take an active part in. New genes are continually being discovered. So while we have decoded the human genome, we have not unlocked most of its secrets. [Pg.352]

Figure 9.1 The Human Genome Project completed the human genome sequence in 2003 using new tools like the computer program shown above. This program provides an automated method of decoding the sequence of base-pairs in DNA fragments extracted from human chromosomes. He brings us to the present situation, where ecological concerns are increasingly important. Current research frontiers such as nanotechnology are included. Of course the recent decoding of the human Genome is ranked as a landmark of polymer chemistry, and the continuing evolution of proteomics is an exercise in structural polyamide chemistry. [Pg.293]

Another generic approach in HTS is parallel analysis, which enjoyed prominent success in the rapid decoding of the Human Genome by capillary electrophoresis with multiple capillaries in 2000. Figure 4.16a-c shows some available HPLC equipment used for parallel analysis. Systems might include... [Pg.99]

The final declaration of the Third Review Conference in 1991 basically repeated the 1986 statement concerning scientific and technological advances of relevance to the BWC. States parties at the Fourth Review of the BWC in 1996, however, felt the need to add to the previous statement by pointing out that any application from genome studies was covered by the BWC s prohibitions as well.26 Thus, the states parties proved to be very perceptive of future applications of scientific breakthroughs and included genome studies applications well before the human genome actually had been decoded. [Pg.44]

As mentioned above, the Human Genome Project, which was initiated in the late 1980s, has spurred the development of technology necessary to facilitate the formidable task of sequencing and decoding the human genome. The dideoxy... [Pg.634]

Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are single-base-pair differences in DNA among individuals where the less common variant occurs in at least 1 % of the total population [1]. The decoding of the human genome has given us... [Pg.3038]

Lynch, April, and Vickie Venne. The Genome Book A Must-Have Guide to Your DNA for Maximum Health. North Branch, Minn. Sunrise River Press, 2009. Provides an explanation of the growing medical ben-ehts provided from decoding the human genome. Discusses several health topics, including cancer, behavior, and heart conditions. [Pg.527]

Shreeve, James. The Genome War. How Craig Venter Tried to Capture the Code of Life and Save the World. New York Alfred A. Knopf, 2004. Describes the competition between Venter and Collins to decode the human genome. [Pg.894]
