Huang Bai Phellodendri cortex

This type of combination involves two herbs that have different functions. The first directly targets the pathological condition and the second increases the therapeutic effect of the first. For instance, Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae rhizoma) nourishes the Yin of the Kidney and clears heat in the Lower-Jiao, while Huang Bai (Phellodendri cortex) reduces empty-heat in the Lower-Jiao and is therefore able to enhance Zhi Mu s function of nourishing the Yin.

For urinary retention, increase the dosage of Talcum, Polygonum Avicularis, and Akebia and add Cortex Phellodendri Huang Bai) and Cortex Cinnamomi Rou Gui).

If there is concomitant yin vacuity, either subtract Bupleurum and Cimicifugae or reduce their dosages and add Rhizoma Anemarrhenae (Zhi Mu) and Cortex Phellodendri (Huang Bai). 

For yin vacuity with exuberant fire, add Rhizoma Anemarrhenae Zhi Mu) and Cortex Phellodendri Huang Bai). This results in Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan (Anemarrhena Phellodendron Rehmannia Pills). 

For nocturnal emission and spermatorrhea, add Fructus Rosae Laevigatae (Jin YingZi), Stamen Nelumbinis Nuciferae (Lian Xu), Radix Polygalae Tenuifoliae (Yuan Zhi), Cortex Phellodendri (Huang Bai), Fructus Amomi (Sha Ren), and Radix Glycyrrhizae (Gan Cao). 

For damp heat in the lower burner, add Radix Sophorae Flavescentis Ku Shen), Cortex Phellodendri Huang Bai), and Talcum Hua Shi).
