Hounsfield, Godfrey

The introduction of transmission CT by Godfrey Hounsfield stimulated interest in similar reconstruction schemes for X-ray scatter imaging. Hence, these techniques are grouped under the general heading of reconstructive X-ray scatter imaging. 

British engineer Sir Godfrey Newbold Hounsfield invented the CAT scanner as soon as it was practical to do so. Development of Computed Tomography The mathematical model for reconstructing an object from multiple projections dates back to 1917, when Johann Radon demonstrated mathematically that an object could be replicated from an infinite set of its projections (Hsieh 2009). This concept was applied only many years later. The Nobel Prize winners Allan M. Cormack and Godfrey N. Hounsfield made substantial contributions to the development of computed tomography (Cormack 1979 Hounsfield 1979). The first cUnical CT scan on a patient took place on 1st October 1971 using a prototype scanner developed by Hounsfield. Since the 1970s, CT have rapidly become a fundamental imaging technique in medical practice (Kalender 2006). 

Computerized axial tomography (Godfrey Newbold Hounsfield) In London, doctors performed the first GAT scan of a hving patient and detected a brain tumor. In a CAT (or GT) scan, X rays are taken of a body like slices in a loaf of bread. A computer then assembles these shces into a detail-laden three-dimensional image. 

The development of computed tomography (CT) independently by both Godfrey N Hounsfield and Allan M Cormack in 1972 has forever changed the practice of medicine in the detection, surveillance and treatment of disease. In the past three decades, we have seen an explosion in technological innovation, particularly in the field of CT. As CT has become more sophisticated, so has the radiologist in the detection and diagnosis of disease.
