Computerized axial tomography

The innovative and technological achievement of computerized axial tomography required a sophisticated understanding of physiology, mathematics, and radiology. A clear comprehension of chemical principles also contributes to the success of this diagnostic technique. [Pg.1]

X-RAY SCAN AND OTHER MEDICAL IMAGERY. Introduction of computerized axial tomography in the form of the X-ray cat scanner (CAT) was a major event in the history of diagnostic medicine. The technology is also referred simply as computerized tomography (CT). [Pg.1761]

Many older studies involved computerized axial tomography (CT) scans of psychiatric patients, most but not all of whom were diagnosed schizophrenic. They have found enlarged lateral ventricles and sometimes enlarged sulci, indicating shrinkage or atrophy of the brain. Nearly all these studies involved patients heavily treated with neuroleptics. [Pg.93]

During the last two years Atlantic Scientific Corporation have been working with a large Ohio based company that manufactures brain and body scanners for hospitals. These are commonly called CAT scanners (Computerized Axial Tomography), and each consists of a large computer and several other microprocessor systems. [Pg.117]

A more recently developed and more sensitive measure of brain impairment is computerized axial tomography, better known as the CT or CAT scan. The CT scan involves passing X-rays through the head in a circular pattern to get a tliree-dimensional image of the brain. The focus can be changed to different depths of the brain to detect internal tumors, enlarged spaces or ventricles, and other internal abnormalities. [Pg.75]
