Uniform practices of key skills pertaining to hospital security can be taught in the simulation hospital. Examples of these scenarios include deahng with violent patients, child abduction, bomb threats, and disaster management. These exercises can be performed in a multidisciplinary fashion mimicking real hospital settings.

Accidents have occurred because hot water was not treated with respect. Five men were killed when a plastic hot-water tank split along a seam [14J. On another plant, a man, about to make some tea, caught his sleeve on the tap of an electric water heater. The heater fell over, 2 gal of hot water fell on him, and he died in the hospital five days later [15]. The heater should have been fixed to the wall. If it had contained a hazardous chemical, it would have been secured, but no one thought hot water was hazardous. Chemicals are not the only hazards on a plant. 

Nevertheless, multiple challenges persist. Reimbursement on a fee-for-service or contractual basis between institutions may not be feasible for the community hospital. Government reimbursement for telemedicine services may remain limited by interstate commerce restrictions and local practice requirements, and may depend on studies demonstrating that the costs of consultation are counterbalanced by avoiding unnecessary transfers. Additionally, privacy concerns must be properly addressed with secure, encrypted transfer of information and rules governing who may access the patient s medical information from a distance. 

The other types of radioactive materials cited in this section (medical industry and food industry sources) produce significantly lower activity levels than fuel from a nuclear power plant. However, these sources of radioactive materials may be appealing to terrorists because they are far more accessible. Indeed, Raman spectroscopy is now found in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries for process control and has very recently been introduced into hospitals. Handheld instruments are used in forensic and other security applications and battery-operated versions for field use are found in environmental and geological studies. 

Typically an in-hospital childbirth-preparation class is the one most families choose. It s conveniently located in their birth location, and it s usually given by a member of the staff familiar with the hospital, which can be reassuring. Unfortunately, that sense of security is often a false one. Many in-hospital classes lack a focus on individual choices and, most important, evidence-based care (rooted in recent studies).These classes have a tendency to educate families about what to expect upon arrival at the birth location, but not about their options and preferences once they arrive. Moreover, some hospital-based classes reflect the institutions policies and are more focused on creating compliancy than on helping patients achieve their individual goals. 

Automated dispensing machines have become common on nursing units in many hospitals.
