The Laundrometer can also do multiple testing. However, this machine would simulate the horizontal axis washing machine which is popular in Europe. It will also be the standard washing machine in the future in the United States. 

So far, we have only been talking about washing machines in general without differentiating between the various types. In terms of construction, the washing machines most frequently available on world markets can be divided into two groups, those with a horizontal drum axis and those with a vertical drum axis as shown in Fig. 3.1.

With the arrival of the horizontal axis machine, dye transfer will become a more important issue to the consnmer. With nsing less water for washing and rinsing, the detergent surfactants used will be in higher concentration. This is particularly true for prespotters where the typical consumer puts a large dose of surfactant on the spot or stain to be removed. Therefore, formnlations need to clean without removing the dye from the fabric. 

An example of a horizontal rotary filter is illustrated in Figure 5. These machines are well suited to filtering quick-draining crystalline solids. Due to its horizontal surface, solids are prevented from falling off or from being washed off by the wash water. As such, an unusually heavy layer of solids can be tolerated.
