The area of influence of a vibrating discharger is limited to a cylinder, the diameter of which is roughly equal to the top diameter of the discharger. Hence, if a vibrating discharger is mounted onto a conical hopper section, flow is confined predominantly to a central flow channel located directly above the discharger. This is tme unless the slope and smoothness of the static cone meet requirements for mass flow, or the diameter of the flow channel exceeds the critical rathole diameter for the material. [Pg.563]

Vertical filters are not convenient for the removal of dry cake, although they can be used in this service if they have a bottom that can be retracted to permit the cake to fall into a bin or hopper below. Recently, dry wire-pipe ESPs are being cleaned acoustically with sonic horns (Flynn, 1999). The horns, typically cast metal horn bells, are usually powered by compressed air, and acoustic vibration is introduced by a vibrating metal plate that periodically interrupts the airflow (AWMA, 1992). As with a rapping system, the collected particulate slides downward into the hopper. The hopper is evacuated periodically, as it becomes full. Dust is removed through a valve into a dust-handling system, such as a pneumatic conveyor, and is then disposed of in an appropriate marmer. [Pg.423]

Lamella settlers are gravity settlers that use a large number of inclined flat plates, closely packed, so that the distance between the plates is small. The gravitational action makes the cells move in the direction of the lower surface of the individual separating space between two plates. Once settled, the particles slide down in a layer towards the plate periphery and then into the sludge hopper. For the same required sedimentation area, lamella settlers are much more compact than vertical ones. Theoretically, their total sedimentation area is the sum of the horizontally projected areas of all plates. In practice, however, only 50% of this total area is effective [137]. The main problem with inclined settlers is that the cells tend to adhere to the plates. Special coating of the plate surface and vibration of the whole lamella pack may alleviate this problem. [Pg.144]

The rifflers shown in Figs 13.1 and 13.2 operate by loading the powder sample into a vibrating hopper which delivers the sample down a chute into eight rotating collectors. Both the delivery and rotational rates can be controlled. [Pg.141]

Typical Experiment. Polyox resin, Grade WSR-5M5, was transferred to a stainless steel hopper positioned over a vibrating feeder. The belt speed was set at 90 inches per minute, and the accelerator was adjusted (with the shutter closed) to deliver a current of 250 /xa. at 2 m.e.v. The shutter was opened, and the feeder was activated. The calculated dose was 0.75 megarad. After irradiation, the viscosity of each sample was measured.
