Microwave solidification is an ex situ mixed-waste treatment process. The process is applicable for homogeneous, wet or dry, inorganic solids. The process dries the waste, mixes it with a matrix modifier, transfers it to a processing container, and subjects the mixture to microwave energy to melt the materials. The processed waste form then cools and solidifies to form crystalline mineral analogs. 

The distributor quality DQ, is expressed as the portion (%) of the fixed-bed cross-sectional area (inlet surface), which is homogeneously wetted by the liquid. The initial maldistribution in the bed inlet (Mdo) is a statistical average of the mass flow rate standard deviation divided by the free surface in the bed inlet. A well-defined state, which means a good, homogeneous wetting of the sohd. 

At each station, 20 oysters of a similar size were collected for metals analyses, and additional oysters were collected for organic analyses and other purposes. Wright et al. (1985) and Jiann and Presley (1997) have shown that a pooled sample of 20 or more oysters is representative of the population at a site. The oysters for metals were frozen in the field and shipped to the laboratory with no other processing. Details of sampling procedures, exact locations of sites, site descriptions and related information are given in Lauenstein et al. (1997). In the laboratory, oyster shells were washed and brushed to remove mud and the soft tissue was removed. The entire soft parts of all 20 oysters were combined to make a pooled sample for each station. The pooled sample was homogenized wet and an aliquot was freeze-dried, or more commonly.
