These items are also described in Lancaster s book on page 106, They are so named because the fire dust sparks drop to remind us of waterfalls. They are prepared as follows(Fig.129) Charge a waterfall composition which contains aluminium powder of relatively large flakes into strong paper tubes which have a thin wall which burns away. Several forms of apparatus employing electrical heati iig wi 11 be described. A simple form may be readily constructed from a domestic electric iron of 400-500 watts rating. Another common system is the fixed knife mill. This consists of a chamber containing fixed knives and a rotating three-armed spider that shreds the fmit by forcing them against the fixed knives. Pellet Mills Pellet mills operate on the principle shown in Fig. 20-92. Moist, plastic feed is pushed through holes in dies of various shapes. Another variation is to use a thin air jet around a process or an opening to a pt(x ess. For welding or soldering on a table, a circular tube with supply holes in the upper side could be used. In canned pumps the rotor (the moving part of the electric motor) is immersed in the process liquid the stator (the fixed part of the electric motor) is separated from the rotor by a stainless steel can. If there is a hole in the can, process liquid can get into the stator compartment. A pressure relief plug is therefore fitted to the compartment and should be used before the compartment is opened for work on the stator. One day, an operator opened the pump without using the pressure relief plug. There was a hole in the can which had caused a pressure build-up in the stator compartment. When the cover was unbolted, it was blown off and hit a scaffold 6 feet above. On the way up it hit a man on the knee and the escaping vapor caused eye irritation. A distilling flask ( litre) is fitted with a double-bored cork. Through one hole a thermometer is inserted, the bulb of which must be covered by the liquid in the flask and through the other a tap-funnel passes. The side-tube of the distilling flask is fixed by a coik into the upper end of a long condenser.
